WELCOME TO MALAKOFF

welcome to malakoff

Malakoff, Texas, settled in the 1830s-1850s, was established with a post

office in 1855 at which time it was named after a Russian town prominent

in a battle in the Crimean War. Although the approximately 2200

population today is small, Malakoff has made major contributions

throughout its history, primarily known as:

  • The place where the “Malakoff Man” -- hand-carved stone heads deemed by scientists to be approximately 30,000 years old -- was discovered in the 1920s and 1930s.
  • One of seven sites in all of the Americas where evidence exists of ancient tribes residing on the Trinity River banks, who could have observed the herds of camels, mastodons and giant sloths that roamed the plains.
  • For years known as the “Lignite City,” Malakoff companies produced the coal (until World War II) that fueled the state-of-the-art Texas Power & Light plant built on the Trinity, which provided power to towns and cities throughout the region.
  • Today, Malakoff is known as the Southern Portal to Cedar Creek Lake.
  • Malakoff today is a small town packed with antique dealers and has become known as the Best Bargain Shopping in Antiques in the state!
